Michigan's Net Metering and RPS

What is Net Metering?

Net Metering is the practice of being paid for the energy that a renewable energy system puts onto the grid. Public Act 295 helped to establish an equal rate of pay for Net Metering. This way when renewable energy is put on the grid people are paid the same rate that is charged when they use power off the grid, regulation and monitoring of Net Metering for utilities is overseen by the Michigan Public Service Commission.

What is interconnection?

Interconnection describes the rules and regulations for a renewable energy system that is connected to the utility grid. A more streamlined and uniform process was created with the creation of Public Act 295.

What is the "utility grid"?

The utility grid is the system that carries electricity from the power plant to the outlet, or light where it finally gets used. This includes the power plant, power lines, transformers, substations as a few components of the grid.
